CBD is just one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, each with its own unique benefits. This week, we explore the sleep-promoting properties of CBN.
CBD may be the MVP of cannabinoids, but its performance is supported and enhanced by a team of lesser-known compounds that are talented in their own right. This synergistic relationship is known as the entourage effect. The theory, first posited by scientists Raphael Mechoulum and Shimon Ben-Shabat in 1998, conjectures that consuming a broad spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes naturally found in the cannabis plant is more effective than ingesting each compound individually. In essence: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Each month, we’ll spotlight one of these lesser-known compounds and bring you up to speed on what the industry knows.
According to the National Institute of Health, an estimated 50-70 million Americans have chronic trouble sleeping. While Cannabinol (CBN) is just starting to garner buzz as a potential sleep aid, it was actually the first cannabinoid to be discovered in the 1970s. CBN is a non- or mildly-psychoactive compound produced when THC degrades and loses its “high”-inducing properties. Studies have indicated that CBN may increase sleep duration and have sedative effects. While CBN may help you sleep longer, it has not yet been shown to help you fall asleep faster. For this reason, combining CBN with the relaxant properties of Cannabidiol (CBD) may be a good way to target the whole sleep experience. CBD has been indicated in numerous studies to ease stress, which is one of the largest contributors to an impaired ability to fall asleep.
CBN is also being studied for its effects on pain. While much more research is necessary, preliminary studies suggest that CBN may act on neurons sensitive to capsaicin, a compound found in chili peppers and many topical pain relievers.
To take advantage of the therapeutic and sleep-improving benefits of Cannabinol, look for CBD products with elevated levels of CBN, like Remedio’s Rest Drops. Rest boasts the same cannabinoid-rich formulation as our signature Drops with increased levels of CBN to bring on a sense of calm and tranquility. Use 30 minutes before bed to relax the mind and promote a deep sleep.
